Public Speaking Tips

Alexandra F.’s journey in public speaking began three years ago, through a spout of job interviews gone wrong during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021. Since then, Alexandra has taken opportunities to improve.

Best advice when starting out?

"Take the road less travelled", and let everything else fall into place. Don't sweat the small stuff, embrace change because that is where the magic happens. Life can be hard, sometimes inconsistent and downcast, but what we need to remember is, we are the curators and get to decide how it all turns out. There is power and empowerment in going it alone for a while, figuring it out, and then sharing your story with the world. It's okay if your first idea didn't work out the way you thought it would, redirection leads to unexpected destinations. The path to the future you want is in the eye of the beholder. Take your time, feel your way through life, and remember to take a chance on yourself.

Tips to get you started?

Breathing exercises can prove effective for getting grounded with yourself before presenting. Taking a breath and stepping back can align your thoughts with your movements, and remember presenting is both about speech and body language.

Record yourself and play it back to listen in if you use filler words (as mentioned in the answer above).

Carry notes when presenting if you need them.

Prepare, prepare, and prepare.

Get grounded and incorporate a level of your own personality, stories and mindfulness into your public speaking.

Stories are what make us dreamers, able to put ourselves in others shoes, get comfortable with new and exciting ventures we are not already familiar with. Stories are what make the world go around, and us in turn thriving and striving for more.

We all deserve the chance to be confident, whether at work, home, in front of friends, colleagues, even the 'stranger' on the bus, tube (if you're in London) and when walking out and about.

Mindfulness, aligning with your true intentions and higher self play a big part in being confident and raising your self esteem.
